Sector by sector, the future is taking shape
Every industry has its own climate story. It’s time we started listening.
Shaken Not Burned
Climate, society, sustainability literacy and transforming our world
Welcome to another week of Shaken Not Burned!
Shaken Not Burned is still officially on a short break: Giulia is relocating from London to Italy, and Felicia is still brewing up plans for next year.
This week, we’ve pulled together a few Shaken Not Burned episodes that explore sector-specific sustainability challenges, from agriculture and the built environment to supply chains and materials.
Why focus on sectors?
Because sustainability isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every sector faces its own pressures, constraints, and opportunities. The carbon footprint of a data centre doesn’t look like that of a dairy farm. Retrofitting a 1970s shopping centre isn’t the same as redesigning a digital supply chain. And yet, these sectors don’t exist in isolation.
Climate risk, regulation, supply disruptions, and shifting customer expectations all move across boundaries. So the more we understand sectoral realities, the more effectively we can design solutions that actually work and, more importantly, scale.
For example:
The built environment is responsible for nearly 40% of global emissions, but most of those come during operations, not construction.
Agriculture isn’t just about food production, it’s also a major player in land use, water, biodiversity, and even misinformation.
The digital supply chain affects everything from retail emissions to labour practices to energy demand in server farms.
And yes, even concrete is transforming, with promising innovations that reduce its carbon footprint without sacrificing strength or scale.
Understanding these intersections isn’t just useful, it’s essential.
So while we regroup for next season, now’s a perfect time to catch up or revisit some of our most sector-focused conversations.
